Highlight cultural heritage.
In the run-up to the 7th European Union-African Union Summit, scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Luanda (Angola) and under the theme “Promoting peace and prosperity through effective multilateralism”, the Delegation of the European Union to Algeria organized, yesterday in Algiers, a day of “African Cultures” at the Residence of the EU Ambassador. This was stated in a statement from the EU delegation.
According to the same source, the initiative is part of a process of bringing together “African and European peoples”, with the ambition of highlighting the creativity, cultural heritage, youth and innovations of the African continent.
On this occasion, the EU Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mellado, declared: “By celebrating African cultures in Algiers today, we are celebrating what underpins the relationship between Europe and Africa: human proximity, creativity and the shared ambition for a prosperous future. » And continued: “A few days before the AU-EU Summit, this event illustrates the vitality of a partnership based on trust, stability and the desire to move forward together. »
The event brought together craftsmen, artists, creators, musicians, dancers, cooks and cultural actors from several African countries, including Algeria, Senegal, Mali, Chad, Congo, Nigeria and Uganda, offering the public an insight into the diversity of African cultural expressions, we read in the press release.
An exhibition and sale of African crafts brought together more than twenty exhibitors representing a wide range of trades, ranging from basketry to textiles, including fashion, leather, wood carving, pottery, embroidery and various traditional know-how, the same source notes.
“Youth occupied a central place in the program,” said the press release. In partnership with Carrefour Cadenkoso, an association of sub-Saharan and Algerian students committed to promoting cultural exchange, intercultural dialogue and the development of African talents in Algeria, two initiatives are organized, according to the delegation:
the emphasis was first placed on youth, with exchanges bringing together young African entrepreneurs, start-ups and innovative project leaders, who came to present their journeys, their successes and the challenges encountered in their respective sectors. At the same time, a discussion-debate then brought together young Algerians, Sub-Saharans and Europeans to reflect on the opportunities for rapprochement between the EU and Africa and the role of youth in strengthening ties between the two continents.
Ultimately, the European delegation stressed that this day illustrates the vitality of a partnership based on human proximity, creativity and a common ambition for prosperity. The event is presented as a sign of trust and the desire to move forward together on the eve of the AU-EU Summit, which marks a quarter of a century of cooperation between the two continents.
