The process of promoting rights in Algeria had taken “great steps” in recent years. This was stated the day before yesterday by the president of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), Abdelmadjid Zaalani, during his speech at the forum of the daily newspaper “Echaâb”.
These advances, he specified, had been achieved “thanks to the guarantees of the 2020 Constitution” concerning the protection and promotion of rights, reaffirming “the importance of continuing the examination of the remaining draft laws, like the law on associations”, in addition to “the acceleration of the promulgation of the implementing texts of the related laws, in order to complete the process of the State’s efforts in terms of the consecration of fundamental rights”.
Informing that the CNDH annual report for 2023 is currently “under development”, the president of the CNDH also called for the need to continue action for the realization of the digitalization project, which constitutes, according to him, “the only alternative to eliminate the phenomenon of bureaucracy and mismanagement, being an obstacle to guaranteeing a quality service to the citizen.” In this sense, the speaker added that “the presence of active digital administrations is able to generate an accelerated and fluid development dynamic, thus eliminating a large part of the causes and manifestations of bureaucracy.”
Mr. Zaalani assured that the Council was working within the framework of its main missions, “to enable citizens to fully enjoy and exercise their rights, particularly political rights”, insisting on “raising citizens’ awareness of the importance of voting as a means of bringing about the change to which they aspire.”
On the same occasion, the president of the CNDH indicated that the state of human rights in our country was also manifested through the “achievements of Algerian diplomacy” which did not fail to defend the rights of peoples to development and self-determination in all international forums. He also highlighted the important role played by Algeria in the defense of human rights at the international level, through its positioning and its strong place in the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva and the UN Security Council. “Algeria truly displays its opposition to the brutal practices committed against oppressed peoples, including the Palestinian people still facing an unspeakable genocide committed by the Zionist entity in the Gaza Strip, and the Sahrawi people by defending their right to self-determination,” he added in this regard.
Regarding the protection of children’s rights, the Council expressed in a previously published statement its satisfaction with the “great efforts tirelessly deployed by the Algerian State, for the benefit of the child, in particular to guarantee free and compulsory education in all school cycles, and to absorb school dropouts in the second and third cycles through vocational training and apprenticeships.”
The Council also welcomed the decline in infant mortality, describing it as an “achievement” in terms of preserving the life of children, as well as in terms of medical care, as evidenced by “all the reports of the relevant UN mechanisms.”
