Algeria reaffirms its commitment.
On the sidelines of the meetings preceding the “Expo 2025-Osaka, Kansai”, Algeria presented in Osaka, in Japan, its advances in the fields of sustainable fuels and green hydrogen, reaffirming its commitment to become a key player in the global energy transition. Through pilot projects and an ambitious strategy, the country intends to reduce emissions related to maritime and air transport, while consolidating its role as regional hub of clean energy.
During ministerial meetings to be held from September 15 to 18, the director general of the prospective at the Ministry of Energy, Miloud Medjelled, took part in the work devoted to alternative fuels for maritime and air transport, as well as the energy of hydrogen. This was indicated by a statement from the ministry made public on Monday.
These meetings brought together ministers, experts and representatives of several countries and international organizations, during which Medjelled represented the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab.
In his intervention on alternative fuels, Mr. Medjelled recalled that the maritime and air sectors alone represent almost 7% of global CO₂ emissions. “For Algeria, the transition to cleaner solutions has become essential,” he said, stressing the interest that the country gives in this approach.
The country has already initiated several initiatives, he said. In this sense, he cited the use of e-methanol and liquefied natural gas (LNG), the integration of DFDE technology into the national maritime fleet to reduce energy consumption, as well as the preparation of new storage and fuel supply facilities specific to Arzew and Skikda, according to the same source.
In the area of aviation, a pilot project was launched with Air Algeria in order to locally produce sustainable fuel (SAF) from refining residues and used oils, he argued. This initiative aims to “reduce air transport emissions while respecting international commitments in Algeria”.
Hydrogen, a strategic priority
Hydrogen, which represents the clean energy of tomorrow, has not been outdone, especially since Algeria is engaged in a major project in this area. Speaking during the meeting dedicated to hydrogen, the director general of the prospective at the Ministry of Algerian Energy put in the central place of this energy in the national energy transition strategy. “Algeria has made hydrogen a national priority, with a roadmap based on six axes,” he said.
This is an integrated regulatory framework, skills training, local production of equipment, innovative funding and investment, international cooperation (in particular via the African hydrogen alliance and the International Hydrogen Trade Forum) and, finally, interconnection projects for export, according to the details provided.
Among these projects is the major project between Algeria and Europe, South2 Corridor. According to forecasts, it should make it possible to export green hydrogen to Europe. By 2040, Algeria aims to produce and export between 30 and 40 hydrogen terawatt hours and its derivatives, or around 10 % of European needs.
In this regard, Medjelled reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to continue its efforts alongside its European partners, in particular Italian, German and Austrian, the first to be engaged in the South2 Corridor project, to materialize this project. Algeria is also committed to developing innovative and sustainable solutions in the maritime, air and energy sectors, aimed at contributing to global carbon neutrality, while strengthening the economic and social development of the country, Africa and the Mediterranean basin.
