The Algerian Minister of the Interior, Local Government and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, presented, from Cape Town (South Africa), the considerable efforts made by Algeria to reduce the risks linked to natural disasters. This intervention took place as part of the ministerial meeting of the working group on disaster risk reduction, organized under the aegis of the G20. This was stated in a press release from the ministry.
Sayoud stressed that “Algeria has made disaster prevention a major national priority.” The country adopted a new legislative framework dated February 26, 2024, which defines the general rules of prevention and intervention, while expanding the list of major risks taken into account to 18 different types. These risks are now managed through precise prevention and preparation plans.
The minister also mentioned the notable progress made in the implementation of the Sendai international framework, in particular through the strengthening of infrastructure, the development of technical and technological capacities, as well as the improvement of early warning and rapid response systems. These efforts particularly focus on seismic risks, flooding and wildfires.
Algeria also relies on modern technologies, such as geographic information systems (GIS) and the analysis of climate data, to facilitate information sharing and decision-making. At the same time, Civil Protection and Civil Defense services benefit from increased support to intervene quickly in the event of a disaster.
The minister also highlighted the establishment of effective financing mechanisms to support affected populations. Among them are dedicated funds such as the Guarantee Fund against Natural Disasters, the National Agricultural Cooperation Fund, as well as the National Solidarity Fund. The insurance sector and civil society are also mobilized to support recovery and local solidarity efforts.
