Faced with increasing health risks and natural disasters, Algeria pleaded, this Sunday in Geneva, for the development of a common Arab health strategy adapted to the specificities of disaster areas and health crises.
This strategy, developed in collaboration with Arab countries, will strengthen the region’s capacity to deal with health emergencies and minimize their impact on populations. The strategy was debated during the 60e session of the work of the executive office of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health, in which the Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saïhi, participated.
During this meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the 77e World Health Assembly (WHA), Mr. Saïhi also affirmed his strong support for the promotion of primary health care and family medicine in the region. The establishment of an Arab committee for primary health care and family medicine, to which Algeria actively contributes, will thus improve access to quality health care for all Arab citizens, in particular in disadvantaged areas.
In addition, the meeting participants also began preparations for the celebration of the Arab Health Day for this year, the aim of which is to raise awareness of public health issues and promote healthy lifestyles.
Faithful to its tradition of solidarity and regional cooperation, Algeria also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to actively contribute to strengthening Arab cooperation in the field of health. Mr. Saïhi underlined the importance of collective action in the face of the common health challenges facing Arab countries, emphasizing the need to share experiences and good practices for better care of populations.
It should be noted that Algeria was selected to present its successful experiences and share its expertise in the fields of health, particularly in the fight against drugs during the 62e ordinary session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health in 2025.
Vaccination: one vsbetween international reference in Tamanrasset
Furthermore, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), decided to support the Algerian proposal to create an international reference center for vaccination in the wilaya of Tamanrasset. This initiative aims to strengthen the capacities of Algeria and Africa in the fight against communicable diseases, by developing research with the ambition of becoming a vaccine production hub for Africa, indicated the Ministry of Health in a press release.
This support was announced following the meeting between Mr. Saïhi and the DG of the WHO, which was held last Saturday, on the sidelines of the participation of the Minister for Works of the 77e World Health Assembly (WHA), which is held in Geneva. in Geneva under the theme “All for health, health for all”.
During this meeting, which took place at WHO headquarters, the two parties discussed cooperative relations between Algeria and the organization, particularly in the field of disease prevention. They also examined ways to strengthen collaboration in other key areas.
It was thus agreed between the top managers of the WHO and those of the health sector in Algeria to study the possibility of creating an African vaccination training network. This network aims to strengthen the capacities of human resources in Africa in the field of vaccination, thus contributing to the improvement of the health of African citizens.
In addition, it was also agreed to adopt new approaches to vaccination, through the exploration of innovative ways to make vaccination programs more effective and efficient, with a focus on access to most vulnerable populations. A complete file will be sent, in the coming days, to WHO headquarters to study ways to make Algeria’s proposal a reality, said the same source.
It should be noted that during this interview, Mr. Saïhi reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting WHO’s efforts to achieve universal health coverage, highlighting the important achievements made in this area over the past few years. years.
For his part, Dr. Ghebreyesus welcomed the efforts made by Algeria to improve its health system, reaffirming the organization’s readiness to support these efforts. He also expressed his wish to visit Algeria in the coming weeks to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of health.
