Despite a water deficit situation, Algeria’s reserves stored this year thanks to appreciable rainfall will ensure a stable supply of drinking water throughout the summer season. This was assured on Tuesday by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Hydraulics, Omar Bougaroua.
He continued that the national filling rate of dams this year recorded an improvement compared to the previous year. “The filling rate of the 81 dams this year is 39%, an improvement of 4% compared to last year,” he added on national radio.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Hydraulics, dams in the east recorded the highest rate, with more than 67%, while those in the center of the country are at 28%. As for the west, the volumes stored in the region do not exceed 19% of storage capacity.
In addition to this resource, the national radio guest discusses major water transfer projects, the use of unconventional water and seawater desalination which will guarantee the country water security.
Addressing in detail the aspect of seawater desalination, Mr. Bougaroua affirms that the project initiated by the President of the Republic will increase the share of this resource from 20 to 40% in national consumption and will cover more than 17 wilayas of the interior of the country. »
