The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, chaired, Monday in Mascara, in the company of the Minister of Hydraulics, Taha Derbal, the ceremony of the official launch of the program of construction of 30 cereal storage silos at the national level.
During his supervision of the kick-off of the launch of the construction of a grain storage silo with a capacity of 1 million quintals, as part of his inspection visit with the Minister of Hydraulics, Mr. Cherfa stressed that “the program for the construction of 30 grain storage silos was launched today, with the first project launched from the wilaya of Mascara”, adding that these silos are being built under the National Plan for the Development of Strategic Crops. He noted that “this plan is part of the program of the President of the Republic,
Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, concerning the construction of 30 silos and 350 local grain storage centers, thus increasing grain storage capacity to 9 million tons. The minister announced that the wilaya of Mascara has benefited from nine local grain storage centers with a capacity of 50,000 quintals for each center, the work of which will be launched in the coming days. Mr. Cherfa stressed that “the wilaya of Mascara is the first nationally in terms of the progress rate of the General Agricultural Census operation, which currently exceeds 70%”, while welcoming “the efforts made by the agricultural sector in the company of the wilaya authorities in this area.” The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Minister of Hydraulics will continue their inspection visit to the wilaya, visiting the desilting projects of the dam in the commune of Bouhanifia and the transfer of water from this infrastructure to the Fergoug dam (commune of Mohammadia).
The program of this visit also includes the inspection of the former pilot farm converted into a fruit tree production center and the inauguration of a laying hen production farm with a capacity of 60,000 units per day, as well as the inspection of a 15,000 m3 water reservoir in the commune of Sig.
As a reminder, the Minister of Agriculture affirmed on Thursday from Tindouf that Algeria will achieve self-sufficiency in durum wheat by 2027, within the framework of the National Plan for the Development of Strategic Crops. The minister recalled the law on investment which will pave the way for partnership with foreign companies, allowing to benefit from experience and technology to improve yields in the field of strategic crops.
