After that of the wilaya of Tlemcen, the project to build the seawater desalination station in the wilaya of Mostaganem was officially launched this Saturday in Sidi Ladjel in the commune of El Khadra, which will host this large-scale project which will strengthen the water security of the wilaya of Mostaganem and the region.
This large-scale infrastructure, which will extend over 12 hectares and reach a production capacity of 300,000 m³ of drinking water per day upon its completion, constitutes one of the strategic projects of the second complementary desalination program decided by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The choice of Sidi Ladjel is not insignificant, its strategic position will allow the station to effectively serve several wilayas in the west of the country, namely Mostaganem, Tissemsilt and Tiaret, affected in recent years by a marked drop in rainfall. Using globally recognized reverse osmosis technology, the facility will help meet the growing demand for drinking water, while reducing pressure on regional dams and groundwater resources.
The launch of the project was given on Friday, in the presence of the wali of Mostaganem, Ahmed Boudouh, the President and CEO of Algerian Sea Water (ADC), Lahcen Bada, as well as the CEO of the Algerian Company for the Realization of Industrial Projects (SARPI), Tarek Nouizi. SARPI, a subsidiary of the Sonatrach group already responsible for the El Tarf station, is responsible for carrying out this project according to the FEED+EPC formula, according to a Sonatrach press release.
A first partial commissioning is planned within 22 months, with an initial capacity of 150,000 m³/day. Ultimately, nearly three million citizens will benefit from this new source of drinking water.
The officialization ceremony for the site took place during a working visit by the Chairman and CEO of Sonatrach, Nour Eddine Daoudi, accompanied by a delegation of senior executives from the Group. The wali of Mostaganem, in the presence of the president of the APW, and representatives of the civil and security authorities, welcomed them to mark the start of this structuring project.
Beyond its essential role in consolidating Algeria’s water sovereignty, the Sidi Ladjel station will generate numerous direct and indirect jobs, from the construction phase through to operation and maintenance. It also promotes the transfer of technology and expertise to national skills, thus strengthening local control in a strategic sector facing the challenges of climate change.
