The fishing and aquaculture sector in the wilaya of Bejaïa has been reinforced by a new investment project in the field of marine aquaculture. This new project, a marine aquaculture farm, with an estimated production capacity at 800 tonnes per cycle, is being implemented in Beni Ksila (north-west of Béjaïa), said the first managers of the Wilaya fishing, Abdelkrim Boudjemai, adding that it is the second project of this scale to be installed in the region, the first having been Toudja.
The entry into production of these two new farms specializing in marine aquaculture is scheduled for 2026, said Boudjemai quoted by the official press agency. Two other new investment projects in this sector, with a production capacity of 800 tonnes each, were validated this year by the Wilaya Commission responsible for granting concessions for the creation of aquaculture establishments, he added.
The wilaya also has six aquaculture projects installed in the open sea, 4 of which are in the production phase, said Boudjemai, stressing that their theoretical production capacity is estimated at 3,800 tonnes per cycle. Two aquaculture farms, already in production, have also launched studies to extend and develop their activity, which will help increase national production and ensure food security, he said.
In addition, the same official said that for 2025, the sector had already sowed more than 2.7 million fry of sea wolf and sea bream, ensuring that before the end of next October, this figure would exceed 5 million. The Fishing and Aquaculture sector in Bejaia also has two projects in the Conchalliculture (breeding of oyster and mussels) and two processing units, added Mr. Boudjemai.
In order to boost the investment in the sector, three fishing ports have been made availableFishermen and professionals in the sector, he said. The official indicated in this context that studies concerning the project to create an aquaculture area of 20 hectares in the wilaya, with a view to hosting aquaculture projects, especially in the field of fish hatching and shrimp, were completed.
