New victory for the Palestinian cause.
The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Friday the recognition of the State of Palestine with the aim of moving towards peace in the Middle East, emphasizing the critical situation in Gaza.
“Reaffirming its commitment to international law and the principles of equality, sovereignty and peaceful coexistence of peoples, the Republic of Armenia recognizes the State of Palestine,” the ministry said in a statement, stressing that “Yerevan sincerely desires the advent of lasting peace” in the region.
Armenian diplomacy said the country had previously supported UN General Assembly resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, a region in which Israel has killed more than 37,000 Palestinians since October 2023. The Armenian ministry also condemned Zionist attacks against civilian infrastructure and violence against the civilian population.
The Palestinian presidency welcomed Armenia’s decision to recognize the State of Palestine in order to move towards peace in the Middle East. In a statement, she expressed her deep gratitude for “this courageous and significant decision”, considering it a crucial step towards strengthening bilateral relations and promoting peace and stability in the region.
The Palestinian presidency thanked Armenia for its “bold and wise step, which highlights the strong bonds of friendship between the two nations,” also praising the commitment of the Armenian government and people to support the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights to his land and self-determination.
“Armenia’s wise decision aligns with the principles of the two-state solution, a strategic choice that supports international will and legitimacy. This recognition contributes positively to the preservation of the two-state solution,” noted the Palestinian presidency, calling on other nations, in particular European countries which have not yet recognized the State of Palestine, to do so.
For his part, Hussein al-Sheikh, secretary general of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), welcomed the decision taken by Yerevan. “It is a victory for law, justice, legitimacy and the struggle of our Palestinian people for liberation and independence,” he stressed on the social network X.
At the end of May, Spain, Ireland and Norway also officially recognized the State of Palestine for the same reason. These recognitions constitute a victory for the Palestinian people who have suffered, since October 7, 2023, an unprecedented racist purge carried out by the Israeli occupying army.
At the UN, 139 of the 193 UN member states have recognized Palestine as a state. These include European nations such as Iceland, Poland and Romania. Other countries such as Algeria, Russia, China and Nigeria, among others, also recognize the State of Palestine.
