On July 19, the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) will issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israeli policies and actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The hearing will begin at 3:00 p.m. local time (UTC+2), the court said in a statement.
The court’s president, Nawaf Salam, will read out the decision. In December 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution requesting the International Court of Justice to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israeli policies and actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. In February, the authority held hearings on the issue. In total, more than 50 states and three international organizations presented their positions on the issue. ICJ opinions, unlike decisions, are not binding. As Reuters notes, Israel has ignored such opinions in the past, but this could now increase political pressure on the Jewish state amid the latest escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. On November 22, 1967, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 242, calling for an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict by reversing most of the results of the 1967 Six-Day War, which resulted in the unification of Jerusalem, as well as the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The UN plan called for Israel’s return to its 1949 borders and the creation of Arab and Hebrew states between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.
