At nearly $1,000 a cup, an establishment in the extravagant emirate of Dubai now offers the most expensive coffee in the world, brewed from Panamanian beans sold at high prices. Located in an industrial district that has become a mecca for coffee lovers, Julith plans to serve, from Saturday, “around 400 cups” of this precious beverage, its co-founder, Serkan Sağsöz, told AFP. From filtration – carried out using a method guaranteeing optimal extraction of flavors – to tasting, including detailed descriptions, the experience can be enjoyed in the dining room or in the intimacy of a private space. Sold for 3,600 dirhams (around $980), or around a hundred dollars per sip, the drink reveals floral and fruity flavors reminiscent of tea. There “are white floral notes like jasmine, citrus flavors like orange and bergamot and a hint of apricot and peach,” describes Mr. Sağsöz
“It’s like honey, delicate and sweet,” adds this enthusiast, who ran a café for seven years in his country, Turkey, before opening Julith last August.
A temple of luxury, the wealthy Gulf emirate is known for its extravagant projects, from the tallest tower in the world to sumptuous hotels and its artificial islands.
“We felt that Dubai was the ideal location for this investment,” he continues. In September, the emirate already appeared in the Guinness Book of Records for the most expensive cup of coffee in the world, offered by the Roasters establishment for 2,500 dirhams (around $680).
This new record sparked some reactions, without really surprising in a city used to millionaires.
