On the occasion of World Peace Day, celebrated every September 21, the Arab Parliamentary Union, under the presidency of Mr. Ibrahim Boughali, president of the National People’s Assembly, launched this Wednesday a supported appeal to the international community to “consolidate the foundations of a culture of peace, tolerance and peaceful coexistence”. This was indicated by a press release from the APN.
Boughali stressed that the commemoration of this day cannot be symbolic only, but that it must be an opportunity to recall “the urgency of building an international order based on justice, mutual respect and the refusal of violence in all its forms”.
“Peace is not a choice, but an imperative claim to guarantee a common future to the peoples of the world,” said the president of the ANP, believing that current geopolitical tensions, prolonged armed conflicts and humanitarian crises require “a collective response based on solidarity and the political will to preserve human dignity”.
This vision is, according to Boughali, “in the universal values carried by monotheistic religions”, as well as in the principles devoted by international humanitarian law and international treaties. “We must widely disseminate the values of peace, tolerance, respect for the other and peaceful settlement of disputes,” he said.
The same official also highlights the importance of strengthening cooperation mechanisms between states, regional and international parliamentary institutions, and civil society organizations, in order to cope with the risks of climbing in different regions of the world. “The dialogue must prevail over the logic of confrontation. Only a peaceful approach, based on compliance with international rules, can guarantee sustainable stability, ”he said.
In addition, it castigates the behavior of certain international entities which “openly flout resolutions of international legitimacy”, in particular the Zionist regime, accused of “continuous and systematic violations of the rights of the Palestinian people and international law”. The Arab parliamentary union calls for “a firm and united position in the face of these abuses” and underlines “the moral and political responsibility of the international community”.
“Civil society also has an essential role to play,” said Boughali, by encouraging peoples to “reject violence, promote dialogue and make peace a choice of society, a founding principle of all collective action”.
Furthermore, the president of the Arab parliamentary union affirms that the consolidation of a peace culture inevitably involves “the mobilization of all wills, the pooling of efforts and the promotion of dialogue as the only way of settlement of conflicts”. He finally calls for “a sincere and concrete commitment in favor of a peaceful, stable and fair future for all nations”.
