Algeria reaffirms

The “inalienable” and “intangible” right of Member States to benefit from the peaceful uses of nuclear energy was affirmed by the permanent delegate of Algeria in Vienna, Ambassador Larbi Latroche, during his participation in the work of the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held in Vienna from June 3 to 7, in which Algeria participated as a member of the Board of Governors of the IAEA.

The ambassador highlighted Algeria’s remarkable role in strengthening the capacities of African countries in the peaceful uses of nuclear technologies and applications. Larbi Latroche underlined the fundamental role of the IAEA, in accordance with its statutes, in strengthening peaceful uses, through the technical cooperation program. He also highlighted “the important contribution of nuclear technologies and applications in achieving sustainable development in emerging countries, particularly in Africa, in accordance with their national needs and priorities”, citing national efforts in this regard. respect, particularly in the areas of health, the fight against cancer, agriculture, the environment and water management. He also welcomed Algeria’s real support for the initiatives of the DG of the Agency aimed at propelling the latter’s role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular the one called “Rays of Hope”. linked to capacity building in the fight against cancer, through its Collaborating Center in the African region.

As a reminder, the Agency had classified in September 2023, the two anti-cancer centers under the “Mustapha Pacha” University Hospital and the “Bab El Oued” University Hospital as Collaborating Center for the Africa region, in as part of the “Rays of Hope” initiative, and in recognition of the Algerian approach in promoting the use of nuclear applications in the field of health and the fight against cancer designed in accordance with the guidelines of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The representative of Algeria took the opportunity to express Algeria’s vigorous condemnation of the genocide committed by the Zionist entity against the Palestinian people as well as its continued efforts, particularly in the UN Security Council.
