The construction of an “Arab Maghreb of the people” is now “an imperative necessity” in view of developments occurring in the world, attributing to Morocco the responsibility of hindering the process of construction of the Arab Maghreb due to its colonial aims and its links with the Zionist entity.
This was indicated by the participants in the study day organized the day before yesterday by the National Institute for Global Strategy Studies (INSEG) under the banner “The Sahrawi cause at the heart of global consciousness” .
In this regard, the director of INSEG, Abdelaziz Medjahed, highlighted the importance of building an “Arab Maghreb of the people”, stressing that the realization of this objective was dependent on the will of the people. He asked himself: “What weight does the Makhzen have compared to that of the peoples of the Arab Maghreb? », maintaining that “the Makhzen does not serve the interests of the people but rather acts to their disadvantage, hence the imperative to reveal it”.
For his part, the director of the Sahrawi Center for Strategic Studies, Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, indicated in his intervention that “the establishment of an Arab Maghreb of peoples constitutes a necessity imposed by the international situation and the successive major mutations, not only in this region but also in Africa.
“The challenges and repercussions are significant and involve a heavy responsibility, hence the need for a return to the bloc approach to allow countries to preserve their sovereignty and interests,” he argued, stressing that “the construction of an Arab Maghreb of peoples is a realistic idea, taking into account the relations between the peoples, the common denominators and the natural resources that the region contains”. He also called for following the example of many African countries which have succeeded in building blocks.
Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud recalled that “the Makhzen hinders the construction of the Arab Maghreb bloc, because it does not respect international legality in addition to its expansionist aims”. He added that the Maghreb Union could not be built for another reason as well, namely “the existence of colonial intentions which do not want the good of the region by working to maintain it as a colony, and this to plunder his wealth.” This is why, he continued, the “Arab Maghreb of the people” is an attempt that must be undertaken by the people.
He underlined, in this sense, that Algeria possessed all the necessary capacities to launch and frame the debate and establish itself as a “locomotive of the peoples of the region for the construction of the Maghreb edifice”.
“The construction of the Maghreb of the people is an anchored and inevitable conviction, being a factor of stability and balance in the region,” he insisted.
For his part, the SADR Ambassador to Algeria, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, considered that in the context of current developments, the real response to colonialist plans was the construction of a “Maghreb of peoples”, welcoming the recent tripartite meeting heads of state of Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.
Speaking on the subject, the director of the Arab Center for Political and Social Research and Analysis of Geneva (CARAPS), Riadh Sidaoui, affirmed that the current objective was to establish an “Arab Maghreb of peoples”, far from the The approach that hinders the construction of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) due to Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara and normalization with the Zionist entity.
For his part, Moroccan journalist and activist Badr El Aydoudi estimated, in his intervention from Spain via videoconference, that it was impossible to build a Maghreb Union within the framework of Morocco’s narrow vision and colonial ambitions.
“There are real attempts to prevent the construction of a union, whether on the part of the Makhzen or the Zionist entity, because any union would make the region a difficult equation, especially in light of current changes” .
