After a notable appearance in Constantine, Dounya El-Djazairia once again won over the audience, this time on the stage of the Algerian National Theater Mahieddine-Bachtarzi (TNA), where her full and expressive voice made every note of the malouf vibrate on Thursday evening. On this occasion, the woman nicknamed “Sultanat El-Malouf” confided to the Young Independent her vision of an art deeply rooted in tradition, but resolutely open to modernity.
This meeting marks a new stage in Dounya El-Djazairia’s concert tour, which began on October 9 in Constantine, her hometown, where she had already received a standing ovation from an audience of music lovers and connoisseurs. A tour which promises to be a true tribute to the musical heritage of Malouf, combining emotion and virtuosity, with a rich program which includes essential pieces such as Dalma, El Boughi, Zadjal Allah Akbar, Hosne El Habib and many other nuggets of the classical repertoire.
“It’s the continuation of a great adventure,” Dounya El-Djazairia immediately declared to the Young Independent after the concert, as part of a question-and-answer game. Before confiding in an emotional voice: “I had an extraordinary welcome in Constantine, as well as here in Algiers. These moments of sharing with the public are a real source of energy, because they touch me deeply and give me the strength to continue! “. For the one that her peers designate as “Sultanat El Malouf”, the mission is, moreover, clear, to promote a “refined and demanding” art while infusing it with “an innovative artistic touch”. From this point of view, she first stated: “There are many enthusiasts, but there is still work to be done to introduce Malouf to all regions of the country, in Djelfa, in Kabylia, among the Chaouis… Malouf is a great school, rich in an impressive history and a unique elegance. “. Faithful to tradition, Dounya El-Djazairia nonetheless remains attached to modernity. Consequently, she then wanted to recall that “Each student has his teacher and [chaque maître prépare l’avenir]. The malouf draws its strength from the past, but it must also look towards tomorrow. » The El Malouf Sultanate claims, above all, a “feminine” artistic approach which, according to it, brings “a new breath” to this ancestral art.
Always on the move, Dounya El-Djazairia is currently preparing the release of her eighth album. “The album is being finalized. Barring any setbacks, it will be available within two to three months. But I prefer to keep a little mystery for the moment…”, she revealed, with a smile on her lips.
Revealed in 1994 in the epic “Algeria”, where she performed no less than 54 songs, Dounya El-Djazairia has since continued to make her way on prestigious stages, from the Cairo Opera to the Carthage festivals, via the Algerian Cultural Center in Paris. A true artist at heart, she juggles, with ease, between poetry and song and navigates, with the same mastery, through the different styles of Algerian music, whether Chaoui, Sahrawi, Tindi or even Andalusian. Note that his talent has earned him several distinctions at national and international festivals.
Whether on stage, in the studio or on television, Dounya El-Djazairia continues to shine the spotlight on malouf, this jewel of Algerian heritage that she carries deep within herself and that she strives to preserve while making it vibrate with current tastes.
