Global Industry Summit

Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, represented Algeria at the 21st session of the General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), which was held in Riyadh. The event, now labeled “Global Industry Summit 2025” (GIS 2025), brought together representatives of 173 Member States, Heads of State, ministers and leaders of large companies to debate the directions of global industrial policies.
Speaking on behalf of Algeria, Minister Arkab underlined the fundamental role of UNIDO. He affirmed that the Organization is a “critical partner in achieving sustainable development”, particularly with regard to Goal 9 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), relating to industry, innovation and infrastructure. Despite a global context marked by rising challenges – notably geopolitical conflicts, climate change and the growing technological gap – Mr. Arkab expressed his “conviction” that UNIDO will, once again, succeed in overcoming these difficulties.
Algeria, strong in its desire to diversify its economy and establish a lasting industrial base, reaffirmed its “full willingness to work constructively” and to continue to strengthen the vital role of the UN Organization. The North African nation is positioning itself to “work hand in hand with countries” to address common challenges and “build a more prosperous industrial future for all”.
Algeria’s participation in this major conference demonstrates its determination to consolidate its position on the international scene as a reliable partner in the fields of industry, energy and mining. The country seeks to promote international partnerships based on mutual interest.
The Riyadh Summit allowed us to examine a range of strategic themes, ranging from the perspectives of sustainable industrial development to digital transformation, including green industry, the circular economy and the promotion of fair value chains. Discussions also focused on financing mechanisms for industrial projects and the exchange of expertise for the management of major projects.
Minister Arkab, at the head of a high-level delegation including senior executives from the hydrocarbons, mining and industry sectors, took this opportunity to highlight the Algerian experience in industrial transformation, the development of conventional and renewable energies, as well as the exploitation of mineral resources. A key moment of Algerian participation was the session dedicated to the theme “Unlocking the potential of clean hydrogen through investment and innovation”. This session highlighted the growing role of clean hydrogen in supporting sustainable industrial development. Above all, it marked the official launch of UNIDO’s Global Clean Hydrogen Program, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF-8). This program will be implemented in nine partner countries, including Algeria, highlighting the country’s commitment to the energy transition and the exploitation of new sectors.
