Firefighters on the ground try to contain the fires
The General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC) is ready to meet the challenges of the 2024 summer season. With a colossal system deployed across the country, the DGPC is committed to guaranteeing the safety of summer visitors and protecting the natural resources of the country.
No fewer than 10,000 professionals and seasonal workers are mobilized to monitor the 613 beaches on the Algerian coast, 455 of which are authorized for swimming. Since the beginning of summer, these experienced rescuers have already saved 699 people from drowning and provided first aid to 365 others, said yesterday a press release from the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC).
Despite their efforts, 14 deaths by drowning were recorded, the majority of which occurred on beaches prohibited for swimming. The DGPC calls for vigilance and compliance with safety instructions to avoid these tragedies.
Unfortunately, despite their efforts, 14 deaths were recorded, the majority of which were on beaches prohibited for swimming, highlighting the risks faced by those who do not respect safety instructions. Faced with the threat of fires which rage every summer, the DGPC has put in place a reinforced fire-fighting system. 20,000 agents distributed in 65 mobile columns are deployed across the country, supported by 505 specialized units in forest areas.
According to the same source, the aerial system is also reinforced with 12 Air Tractor planes, 2 B200 planes from the national army and 6 MI 26 helicopters mobilized for reconnaissance, identification and extinguishing fires. Five new regional detachments were created this year in El Tarf, Sétif, Blida, Chlef and Sidi Bel Abbes, bringing the total number of detachments to eight. This measure aims to ensure a rapid and effective response to fires throughout the national territory.
Last year, the DGPC’s fire-fighting system made it possible to contain 1,052 forest and bush fires, thus saving thousands of hectares of vegetation. However, 41,594 hectares of land were burned, including almost 11,487 hectares of forests.
The DGPC remains determined to protect citizens and the environment. Thanks to their unfailing commitment and rigorous preparation, Civil Protection teams hope to minimize risks and guarantee a safe and enjoyable summer for all Algerians and visitors to the country.
