The construction work on the largest railway bridge in Algeria and Africa, crossing the Daoura wadi for more than 4.1 km in the wilaya of Tindouf, has been fully completed, announced the day before yesterday, the National Agency for the Study and Monitoring of Railway Investments (ANESRIF).
The official reception of this railway viaduct will constitute a “major step” in the implementation of the megaproject of the Western mining railway line, linking Béchar – Tindouf – Gara Djebilet over a total distance of 950 km, welcomed Abdelkader Mazzar, central director of communications at ANESRIF.
This exceptional work of art required the pouring of 154,100 m3 of reinforced concrete and the mobilization of 117 load-bearing decks, 1,170 prestressed concrete beams, as well as 116 piers resting on 1,432 piles, said the manager.
“The completion of this giant railway bridge represents for Algeria a challenge successfully met, both by the complexity and the scale of this infrastructure, considered one of the most important and most difficult sites of the megaproject,” underlined
Mr. Mazzar, adding that “this result was made possible thanks to the know-how and performance of the national companies involved in its achievement”. He recalled that several technical measures had been taken upstream to guarantee the smooth running of the work on this 12-meter-high structure. Among them, the installation of prefabrication areas for special concretes as well as concrete plants equipped with cooling systems, essential to maintain the pace of work during the intense heat characteristic of the region.
The megaproject of the Béchar – Tindouf – Gara Djebilet line, which crosses the wilayas of Béchar, Béni Abbes and Tindouf, includes a total of 1,431 engineering structures, including 45 railway bridges, 48 road bridges and 1,338 hydraulic structures, recalled the same ANESRIF manager.
It should be recalled, therefore, that the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced, during the last meeting of the Council of Ministers, that the Béchar-Tindouf railway line will be put into service in January 2026. He ordered the Minister of Public Works “to prepare the inauguration of the new railway line, in the middle of the desert, linking Tindouf to Béchar, in its entirety, in January 2026, for its official entry into operation”, indicated the press release from the Council of Ministers.
