President calls for international help after plane carrying his vice president disappears

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has appealed for help from the international community in search and rescue efforts after the plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima was reported missing on Monday morning. In a televised address to the nation late Monday evening, Mr. Chakwera said he had sought help from neighboring and other countries.
“The international community is committed to supporting the country’s security agencies with cutting-edge search and rescue technologies until the plane is found,” he continued. Mr. Chakwera said he had ordered search and rescue operations to continue pending international assistance. The Malawi Defense Force plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima was unable to land at its intended destination at Mzuzu Airport in the north of the country due to adverse weather conditions and was advised the pilot to return to Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe before the plane disappeared from radar around 10 a.m. local time (08:00 GMT) on Monday, according to Mr Chakwera. The president called on all Malawians to pray for the lives of those on board and their families, saying he was “clinging to every fiber of hope that there may be survivors.” Search and rescue operations are concentrated in the country’s artificial forest, Chikangawa, on the outskirts of Mzuzu town, where the plane was last located, according to the president.
