The start of the implementation of the project for a seawater desalination station in the wilaya of Tlemcen was launched this Saturday. A strategic project which aims to strengthen the water security of the wilaya.
Less than a month from the approval, by the Council of Ministers, of the location of three new seawater desalination stations in the wilayas of Chlef, Mostaganem and Tlemcen, things are taking shape on the ground. Work on the construction of the station in the wilaya of Tlemcen was launched in Aïn Ajroud, Commune of Marsa Ben M’hidi.
It was the wali, Youcef Bechlaoui, accompanied by the president and CEO of the Sonatrach Group, Noureddine Daoudi, who kicked off the first work on the project to build a station with a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters of drinking water, the wilaya services indicated in a press release.
In the presence of elected officials and local officials, the wali underlined the importance of this project, which is part of the implementation of the decisions of the Council of Ministers of October 19, 2025. According to him, this station constitutes one of the strategic projects aimed at strengthening the water security of the wilaya of Tlemcen.
The wali also underlined the commitment of local authorities to support this “ambitious project” and “to work in a team spirit to apply on the ground the orientations of the President of the Republic, by accelerating the implementation of structuring and strategic projects intended to improve public service and the living environment of citizens, while supporting the local economy”.
It is the Cosider company which has been responsible for carrying out this vital project, which will help to cover the drinking water needs of the wilaya, it was specified, noting the creation, through this project, of more than 1,500 direct and indirect jobs during the construction and operation phases.
It should be remembered that this project was approved by the Council of Ministers on October 19, as well as two other stations in the west of the country, one in Mostaganem and the other in Chlef. These three desalination units will strengthen the supply of drinking water to local populations and will meet the water needs in the Western region, known to have a deficiency in this area.
The President of the Republic, it will be recalled, then warned against the effects of drought, ordering the development of rigorous scientific studies which take into consideration the averages and real figures of drinking water consumption, while taking into account the specificity of each region in terms of rainfall.
