The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, affirmed, the day before yesterday Sunday in Algiers, that the increase in demand for electric energy across the country, reaching a new record this afternoon, reflected the economic dynamism of Algeria and the added value provided by several sectors. “The recent increase in national demand for electricity constitutes a positive indicator from an economic point of view and reflects the added value provided by several sectors to the national economy thanks to electric energy,” said the minister during his visit to the Electricity System Operator (OSE) under Sonelgaz, stressing that “a new peak in electricity consumption of 19,500 MW was recorded today at 2:48 p.m.”
This increase denotes that the national electricity system is managed “with competence and professionalism, ensuring a fair and balanced distribution across all regions of the country without reporting any malfunction” of the network, in addition to the continuous improvement of the service provided in this area, he said.
The Minister of Energy and Mines recalled that the sector has all the means to ensure the coverage of the growing national demand for electricity, which is expected to reach 20,000 MW this year, driven by the demand of households, as well as the sectors of agriculture, industry and services. Supervising the work of engineers and technicians in the control room at the Center, Mr. Arkab said that the level of control achieved by the Sonelgaz group is the result of the programs and projects drawn up in recent years in terms of electricity production, which aim to produce 25,000 megawatts, while controlling the chain of activities, such as production, distribution, transport and management.
The OSE is the backbone of the national electricity grid, a decision-making centre to ensure the balance of the electricity system by reconciling supply and demand for electrical energy.
Equipped with a reliable information system and advanced monitoring and remote control systems, it relies on the latest technologies in management, which will ensure good continuity and quality service, in accordance with the explanations provided.
“Work is underway to expand and strengthen the national network, by working to move to higher voltages such as 700 kilovolts in the medium term,” said Mr. Arkab, praising in this regard, “the great professionalism” of the workers, managers and maintainers of the Sonelgaz group, as well as the total control of the various network management techniques.
After reiterating the State’s support and assistance to Sonelgaz in its investments aimed at strengthening and structuring the national electricity network,
Mr. Arkab announced that the Sonatrach and Sonelgaz groups will sign, in the coming days, an agreement with international partners for the implementation of a submarine cable project to export electricity to Europe.
“Sonatrach and Sonelgaz are preparing to sign contracts for the construction of an undersea electricity cable linking Algeria to Europe, which will allow our country to export both conventional electricity produced from natural gas and electricity produced from alternative and renewable sources,” the minister said.
