Candidates for the 2024 baccalaureate have their fate fixed. The results of this exam were revealed on Thursday by the Minister of National Education, Abdelhakim Belabed, during a press conference, shortly before the results were posted at the school level.
Up by more than 8%, the national success rate is experiencing “a significant leap in this area”, estimated the Minister of National Education, knowing that the national success rate last year was 50.60%. For their part, the unions considered it “unacceptable” to “average”, knowing that the candidates’ copies were subjected to a fourth correction and the marking scales were revised in many subjects in favor of the candidates.
The Minister of National Education expressed satisfaction with the baccalaureate success rate, which is 58.28%, compared to that of 2023, estimated at 50.63%, considered to be the lowest rate since the 2016 session. This year, the admission average has not been revised downwards, that is to say that “any candidate who has obtained an average equal to or greater than 10/20 is considered a baccalaureate winner,” said Mr. Belabed, during a press conference devoted to the announcement of the baccalaureate results. “The 2023 baccalaureate success rate was 50.61%. There is therefore a qualitative increase of almost 8% this year. This confirms the work provided by the national education family. It is a collective success,” he said.
The observation made by the Minister of National Education is not shared by the Autonomous Union of Education and Training Workers (Satef), which estimates that nearly half of the baccalaureate candidates failed this crucial exam which opens the doors of universities to the winners or allows them to access the grandes écoles. Contacted by The Young IndependentMr. Amoura, SG of Satef, described the baccalaureate success rate as “unacceptable” and “unjustifiable”, considering that the exam subjects “were affordable” and “within the reach of an average student”. According to him, nothing justifies this rate given that all the facilities were offered through, in particular, private lessons and those provided on the various social networks, as well as the marking scales in favor of the candidates.
“There is a problem and we need to sit down around a table to dissect the results, analyze them sector by sector, subject by subject and learn lessons in order to move towards a radical overhaul of the Algerian education system, including official exams,” he suggested. “In truth, the announced success rate does not reflect the real rate. The correction scales have been changed in many subjects in favor of the candidates. We need to stop this tinkering. It is in the interest of the sector and our children,” Mr. Amoura stressed, while considering that the level of the students is “very low.”
Amoura recalled the work that was done during the 2015/2016 school year on the reform of the baccalaureate, while nothing was done on the ground. “How long will we continue to justify failure? If we continue like this, without immediately moving towards a radical overhaul, we will have the same results,” he denounced. In terms of figures, the head of the education sector also announced that out of 862,733 schooled and registered independent candidates, 544,385 candidates took the baccalaureate exam this year, of which 317,258 were admitted.
Mathematics in the lead
Mathematicians are at the top of the various secondary education streams, with the mathematics stream having achieved the highest success rate (82.25%), revealed Mr. Belabed, indicating that the mathematics high school of Kouba (Algiers), Mohamed-Mokhbi, recorded an exceptional success rate of 100%. Moreover, the best average at the national level went to a mathematician. Mohamed El Amine Mokrane, from the Belkebir-Abdelkader high school (Tipasa), mathematics stream, with an average of 19.62.
Second place went to Maria Ines Rahab, from Colonel-Lotfi High School (Oran), experimental sciences stream, with an average of 19.54. For her part, Oulem Wissal, from Les Frères-Achi High School (Khenchela), came third nationally with an average of 19.52. Concerning the arts stream, whose baccalaureate exam was held for the first time in Algeria this year, the success rate reached 79.45%.
It should be noted that now that the averages have been revealed, the stage of choices and registration will begin in a few days, and in this regard, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, had announced a series of measures aimed at ensuring the success of the 2024/2025 academic year, in particular through the strengthening of the digital registration system and the publication of a circular relating to the orientation of new high school graduates.
