The first and second sections of the road linking the July 5 interchange to Khraïcia were put into service today, Thursday, which will relieve traffic congestion in several municipalities in the west and south of the capital.
These two sections, which were inaugurated by the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellawi, as well as by the Minister, Governor of Algiers, Mohamed Abdelnour Rabhi, extend from the July 5 interchange to the Baba Hassan municipality interchange over a distance of 7 kilometers (km), while the total distance of the project is estimated at 10 km.
This project will improve traffic flow in the municipalities of El Achour, Draria, Baba Hassen and Ouled Fayet, while relieving pressure on the southern bypass road.
In a press release, the Secretary General of the State of Algiers, Abdel Rahman Rahmani, confirmed that this road was designed to become, once its third and final section is completed, a “main artery” of the capital’s road network, because it will greatly facilitate traffic between Bab El Oued and Khraissia.
Furthermore, Mr. Rahmani revealed a project aimed at connecting the new town of Sidi Abdallah to this road, so that it has direct access to Bab El Oued, with work on this project expected to begin in 2026.
The spokesperson said many public projects currently underway in the capital will be completed by the end of this year and the beginning of next year.
For his part, the director of public works of the Land of Algiers, Hamid Bouazgui, explained in a statement to APS that the delivery of the third and final section of the project, which extends from the Baba Hassan interchange to Khraissia over a distance of 3 km, will take place during the second quarter of 2026, with the progress of the work currently estimated at 25%.
He also revealed his intention to carry out additional projects for the new road, including the feasibility study of an underground tunnel at the “Mohamed Boudiaf” sports complex, as well as the construction of an interchange for vehicles coming from the southern bypass, coming from Casablanca, in order to access the new road.
In addition, Mr. Bouazgui noted the progress of studies concerning the increase in the number of lanes on the southern ring road (from four to five lanes), as well as on the coastal road linking Bab El Oued and Ain Benian, projects which fall under the “yellow plan” for transport in Algiers.
It should be mentioned that Mr. Jalawi and Mr. Rabhi participated, in addition to their supervision of the commissioning of the first and second sections of the new road, in a tree planting operation at the Baba Hassan interchange.
