President Nicolas Maduro

Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro said on Monday that his country has faced “the greatest threat that our continent has known in the past 100 years”, while the United States strengthens its naval presence near the country’s territorial waters.

During a press conference, Maduro described the American decision “unjustifiable” and “absolutely criminal threat”.

He said eight American navy ships carrying 1,200 missiles and a nuclear submarine aimed at Venezuela.

The United States has intensified what it calls “maximum pressure”, this time by military means, and in response, Venezuela declared a maximum preparation state to defend the country, said Maduro.

The Venezuelan President insisted that Venezuela would not give in to “blackmail and threats”, adding that the country was peaceful, but that it would fight to defend its territory if it was attacked. He announced a national program aimed at forming civilians and creating a combat unit of community militia in order to strengthen the country’s defenses.

He rejected the accusations of drug trafficking carried by the United States against his government, stressing that the Venezuelan security forces have intercepted significant drug cargoes and neutralized hundreds of planes used by criminal groups.

Maduro said that existing communication channels with the United States government are “broken”, but Venezuela still maintains its diplomatic and dialogue canals.
