Algiers’ wali, Mohamed Abdennour Rabhi, chaired on Tuesday a meeting of the executive council dedicated to three key files. On the agenda, the preparation of the start of the 2025/2026 school year with the delivery of new establishments, the implementation of preventive measures to limit the risks of flooding as autumn and winter approaches, as well as the last adjustments linked to the organization of the 4th edition of the intra-African trade fair (IATF 2025), which will be held from September 4 to 10 to 10 to 10 September 2025 in the capital.
The first file examined focused on the school. The capital is preparing to welcome tens of thousands of additional students next September. To absorb this pressure, the wilaya finalized the creation of 12 primary schools, 3 colleges and a half-board high school. To this are added 27 school canteens, a unit dedicated to educational monitoring, as well as 72 additional classes built in the context of extension operations.
So many structures intended to relieve overloaded establishments and to improve reception conditions. But some sites are still delaying. To remedy this, the wali ordered a continuous work, 7 days a week, until their final delivery. He also demanded that the necessary equipment be installed in the new establishments “as soon as possible”.
For families, the wilaya provides for an additional boost, namely 14 local markets will be open to offer school supplies at supervised prices, guaranteeing availability and accessibility. This initiative targets a successful and smooth school year for students as well as for their parents.
The second file of continental scope concerns the IATF 2025, a demonstration which should attract delegations from the whole continent. The wilaya services are working on the development of official sites and routes that will welcome participants.
The wali insisted on the quality of the reception and the development of the capital: maintenance of historic monuments, upgrading of tourist infrastructures, extension of museum opening hours and reinforced animation of public spaces. “It is not only a question of succeeding in a major economic event, but also of showing the modern and hospital face of Algiers,” he insisted in front of the executives present.
The third point addressed is the management of natural risks linked to the heavy rains expected in the fall and winter. The images of past floods are still in the spirits, and the authorities want to avoid reliving such scenes.
A report detailed the actions in progress, with regard to cleaning wadis and avoiller, cleaning of road tunnels, maintenance of pumping stations, elimination of black dots and removal of rubble. The wali required regular operations and maximum mobilization of human and material resources. According to the wali, it is essential to guarantee the fluidity of traffic and protect residents from vulnerable neighborhoods.
