Eight political parties represented in the House of Representatives recently dissolved in Nepal qualified the dissolution of unconstitutional and requested its reinstatement.
In a joint declaration published on Saturday, the Nepalese Congress, the CPN-UML, the CPN (Maist Center), the CPN (Unified Socialist), the Janata Samajbadi Party, the Lokterik Samajbadi Party, the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party and the Janat Party demanded the immediate cancellation of this decision, considering that devalued the mandate of the people.
President Ram Chandra Poudel dissolved parliament on Friday, shortly after appointing the former Supreme Couffe Sushila Karki, 73, acting Prime Minister, following several days of demonstrations led by “generation Z” who overthrew the government of Kp Sharma Oli. The dissolution of the Parliament constituted a major request for the leaders of protests.
The parties invoked article 76 (7) of the Constitution and the previous ones established by the Supreme Court, believing that this decision of the President broke with constitutional practice.
This decision brings not only reached the mandate of the people, but also attacks the very supremacy of the Constitution, “said the declaration, adding that the demands of the demonstrators should be dealt with by an institution elected by the people.
The 275 seats room was dissolved shortly after Paudel took oath to Karki, with legislative elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.
At least 51 people were killed and many others injured in mass demonstrations this week, launched by the ban on certain social media platforms. Protests have evolved into a broader movement against alleged corruption and nepotism within the political elite, the demonstrators targeting residences, the Supreme Court and other public buildings.
