Around fifty fires neutralized in 24 hours

Recalling this June 17 and for the second time the ban on the use by campers of barbecues in or near forests, the Directorate of Forests and Green Belt of the wilaya of Algiers is on alert against possible outbreaks of forest fires during the summer season, just like the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC) which, in turn, is on guard and ready to act with its vast intervention system deployed in the areas the most sensitive in the country. During the last twenty-four hours, around fifty fire sources were eliminated by the various intervention teams reporting to the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC) supported by intervention teams belonging to at the Forestry and Green Belt Department. “During the period from June 18 to 19, the system for fighting forest, scrub, harvest and palm grove fires extinguished 49 fires across several wilayas of the country, including five forest fires, two fires maquis, five brush fires, 26 harvest fires, four fruit tree fires, four hay bale fires and three palm tree fires,” reported yesterday Wednesday the DGPC through the presentation of the results of the interventions of its units. The rapid annihilation of these fires, noted the DGPC press release, “made it possible to avoid their spread”, added Civil Protection, as well as “the preservation of important plant cover and harvest”, said the same source. This series of extinguishing fires carried out by the DGPC intervention units throughout the national territory was preceded by the elimination of 21 other fires during the day of June 16.
Indeed, the system for fighting forest, scrub, harvest and palm grove fires carried out during the period from June 16 to 17, the extinction of 21 fires that occurred across several wilayas of the country, including a scrub fire. , six brush fires, nine harvest fires, two fruit tree fires, one hay bale fire and two palm fires,” the DGPC previously announced in another press release. That said, the fight against forest fires is involved in the duration, becoming even daily and will extend until the end of the summer season, that is to say at the end of next September.
Equipped with great resources, particularly with the acquisition of six new water bomber planes as well as drones and helicopters, the intervention men from Civil Protection, supported by brave colleagues from the Forestry Department, are showing a lot of courage and combativeness in the face of the outbreaks of fire that appear on a daily basis. Setting up Advanced Posts (AP) and Observation Posts (PO) in the forests, maquis and harvests, the intervention teams of the DGPC and the Forestry Directorate both monitor and control the situation. A situation, however, sensitive in a summer month where temperatures will be close to 45 degrees Celsius.
On the other hand, and concerning the overall assessment of the number of interventions carried out by Civil Protection units over the last twenty-four hours, yesterday’s press release from the DGPC reported
“2,645 interventions, i.e. one intervention every 30 seconds, including 1,485 medical evacuations and 475 miscellaneous operations, in the different types of intervention following emergency calls, involving traffic accidents, domestic accidents, medical evacuations, fire extinguishing and safety devices,” we read in the said press release. Concerning road safety, the DGPC counted 224 interventions following several traffic accidents occurring across several wilayas of the national territory, which caused the death of six people and 321 others injured, the heaviest toll was recorded at the level of the wilaya of Tébessa where two people died and seven others injured following two traffic accidents, as well as the death of two people and six others injured in a road accident that occurred in the wilaya of Tiaret, following a collision between two vehicles on RN No. 14, Sebaine commune, daira de Mahdia, the victims were evacuated to local health structures by civil protection, according to the DGPC.
