In the implementation of the national drug prevention strategy 2025-2029, initiated by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the official kickoff of the national caravan to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs and psychotropic substances in schools will be given this Sunday by the Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, Lotfi Boudjemâa, under the evocative slogan “November, a new era. A conscious and healthy youth”. This was stated in a press release from the ministry.
Placed under the high patronage of Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, it is from the Martyrs’ Sanctuary in Algiers, a high place of national memory, that the signal for an unprecedented campaign will be given, both in its scale and in the diversity of its actors. Simultaneously, the walis will launch the caravan in their respective wilayas, thus marking a collective and decentralized commitment against a global scourge which increasingly affects young people.
This large-scale action is organized by the National Office for the Fight against Drugs and Drug Addiction (ONLDT), in collaboration with several ministerial departments, including those of the Interior, Health, National Education, Youth, National Solidarity, Sports and Religious Affairs. The campaign also mobilizes the wilaya of Algiers, the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC), the National Body for the Protection and Promotion of Children (ONPPE) as well as the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA), in a dynamic of unity and consultation with local actors and associations.
Through this caravan, the Ministry of Justice and its partners intend to strengthen collective vigilance in the face of a phenomenon which endangers the health, safety and future of thousands of young people, the objective being to prevent rather than cure, and this by disseminating, from the school environment, a culture of prevention, responsibility and self-respect. The ministry thus underlined the importance of “supporting young people, students and civil society in the fight against drug addiction, by spreading the culture of health awareness and instilling the values of prevention and individual and collective responsibility”. In other words, it is about giving young people the tools to understand, refuse and resist, while placing society as a whole at the heart of the protection process.
Pedagogy as a bulwark
The program for this campaign includes conferences, interactive workshops, educational sessions in schools, field demonstrations and regional conferences. Public health experts, psychologists, educators and community stakeholders will be mobilized to dialogue with students, explain to them the dangers of illicit substances, but also help them develop reflexes of vigilance and solidarity. The method adopted is based on a participatory pedagogy, centered on listening and exchange, in the hope of creating a lasting movement within schools. The challenge goes beyond simple awareness-raising, it is about forming a lucid and responsible generation, capable of facing the challenges of its time without falling into the traps of dependence.
This caravan is part of the national drug prevention strategy (2025-2029), recently implemented by the public authorities. This strategy is based on four major axes: prevention, care, social reintegration and intersectoral cooperation. Its mission is to strengthen coordination between institutions, to modernize detection and processing tools, and to promote an approach based on science, communication and proximity to citizens.
By initiating this campaign in schools, the government is laying the first stone of a global system where education becomes the first line of defense against drugs. President Tebboune has also recalled on several occasions that youth are the living force of the nation and that they must be protected, supervised and supported to preserve the values of society.
Furthermore, the choice of the month of November, associated with the memory of the outbreak of the war of national liberation, is not insignificant. By placing this campaign under the slogan “November, a new era. A conscious and healthy youth”, the initiators want to recall that civic consciousness, inherited from November 1954, remains the key to national renewal.
It is a call for vigilance and responsibility, but also for the continuity of the fight, this time against the modern scourges which threaten social cohesion. In addition, the launch at Maqam Echahid, a place of contemplation and unity, gives this initiative a strong symbolic significance, that of a nation which remembers its martyrs while protecting its future. Therefore, through this caravan, Algeria reaffirms its determination to build a united and conscious society. It focuses on education, prevention and cooperation to face a global challenge which, today, calls for the union of all wills. By bringing together institutions, schools, families and civil society, the country is inevitably paving the way towards a new generation of enlightened and responsible young people, capable of raising the torch of national renewal.
