L’expérience algérienne dans l’industrie automobile

Algerian experience in the automotive industry

To build a continental ecosystem in the automotive industry capable of meeting growing demand in vehicles on the continent, “Africa needs African solutions” based on local human and material resources. This is said of the president of the African Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAAM), Martina Biene, Friday in Algiers, as part of the African Automobile Salon, during the 4th edition of the intra-African trade fair (IATF 2025).

Efforts are currently focusing on the finalization of origin certification procedures for vehicles and components, an essential step for continental industrial integration, she continued. Intervening during this meeting, the director general of industrial development at the Algerian Ministry of Industry, Kheireddine Benaïssa, stressed that Africa is moving from the status of simple consumer to that of effective producer of vehicles, evoking the opening of new factories, the rise of the subcontracting industry and the return of major world brands on the continent.

Presenting the experience of Algeria in this field, the speaker said that the country has achieved notable progress after having revised its strategy according to a more realistic approach, passing assembly projects to a real industrial production. In their interventions, participants have focused on the importance of establishing effective agreements and procedures for certification of the origin of products between African countries, to continue negotiations concerning the mechanisms of the carbon tax to avoid export obstacles to European markets and to improve logistics infrastructure to support the regional value chain.

On the sidelines of the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the African import and export bank (Afreximbank) and AAAM to promote trade and intra-African investments in this sector. The memorandum, signed by the Director of Facilitation of Trade and Investments in Afreximbank, Gainmore Zanamwe, and the president of AAAM, Martina Biene, relates to three main axes: the launch of regional channels for the automotive battery industry, the development of a funding policy specific to the sector and capacity building place. Observers believe that the Algerian experience, in terms of automotive industry, which dates back to the first years of independent Algeria, deserves to be taken into account.
