National memory constitutes one of the immutable foundations of the State, working to preserve it as a living inheritance intended to consolidate the identity and unity of the nation. This is what the Minister of Moudjahidine and Local Minister, Laïd Rebiga, said this Sunday during the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the National Center for Studies and Research on the National Movement, the Popular Resistance and the Ovender Revolution.
Rebiga said that “national memory is a vital component of our collective being and a base of our unity”, in its speech celebrating this anniversary, at the headquarters of the National Center for Studies, in a tribute supported by a structure which remains a bastion of historical truth. He also pointed out that the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has always considered national history and memory as essential foundations of collective identity and state security doctrine.
The Minister argued that the National Center for Studies and Research on Popular Resistance was born from the desire to institutionalize historical research and protect it against reducing or falsified research. Mr. Rebiga assured that this structure offers a solid academic framework, allowing researchers to analyze all the stages of the national struggle according to a rigorous and documented methodology.
He noted that one of the major contributions of the center lies in its capacity to deconstruct the stories of the colonial school and to refute its theses, which aim to weaken the memorial heritage of Algeria. “This center remains an instrument of intellectual resistance in the face of the discourses that attack our heritage, our symbols and our memory,” he added.
In addition, he assured that “the historical reference of Algeria is built on the base of victory”, recalling that the Algerian people, forged by their struggles and their sacrifices, has always carried the spirit of the resistance. “The doctrine of our people is that of victories,” he said, “he believes neither in chess nor defeats, despite false campaigns, suspicious stands and vain attempts to undermine national unity”.
The Minister also highlighted the strength of internal cohesion as a key to the country’s resilience, arguing that “Algeria is perfectly aware, on the regional and international level, of the issues that surround it. His bet remains the rehearsal of victories, thanks to the solidity of his inner front and the symbiosis between the people and their direction ”. He stressed that this dynamic is based on the accumulation of historical experiences, the depth of the transmitted values and the capacity of the national elite to analyze events and to draw the right lessons.
An inner front in front of malicious propaganda
Rebiga also highlighted the central place of memory in the construction of national identity, recalling that it is not a simple set of archives but “a pillar of our collective being, embodied by the genius and the sacrifice of the sons and daughters of Algeria”.
Faced with “slanderous platforms” and “malicious propaganda” which seek to sow discord, the minister hammered that Algeria finds its strength in “the cohesion of its inner front” and in the unwavering unity between the people and its leaders. He added that this cohesion is the guarantee of future victories and the best protection against division attempts.
In addition, the Minister wanted to recall that, since its creation, the Center has benefited from permanent support from its department so that it remains an effective instrument at the service of historical scientific research. This support resulted in the implementation of mechanisms guaranteeing the continuity of its missions, the strengthening of its visibility on the national and international scientific scene, as well as by constant vigilance so that national memory remains alive and firmly rooted. Mr. Rebiga said that “our objective is to work tirelessly so that national memory is transmitted to future generations in a responsible, scientific and academic manner, while helping to consolidate a coherent and unifying national discourse”.
As an extension of presidential guidelines, Mr. Rebiga praised cooperation efforts between institutions, researchers and civil society, believing that the documentation and the dissemination of history must be “the work of a collective and integrated action”. He recalled that national memory cannot be effectively defended only through a synergy between all the actors concerned, in this case the State, scientific organizations, associations and citizens.
The ceremony ended with a tribute to those who have contributed to building and developing the center for thirty years, whether researchers, managers or partners.
Thirty years after its creation, the National Center for Studies and Research on Popular Resistance appears more than ever as an intellectual fortress. Its mission remains essential, that of protecting the national memory of distortions, anchor it in collective conscience and making it a solid bulwark in the face of attempts at division.
