In application of the decision taken in 2021 by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, establishing the observation of a minute of silence on the occasion of National Emigration Day, commemorating the massacres of October 17, 1961, gatherings of contemplation were organized, Thursday at 11:00 a.m., in memory of the martyrs of these massacres perpetrated by French colonialism against emigrants Algerians left, Paris, demonstrate peacefully in Paris and were violently repressed, leaving hundreds dead, injured and missing. Bodies were thrown into the Seine, the river that runs through the French capital.
This date is thus commemorated, each year, throughout the national territory as well as at the level of Algeria’s diplomatic and consular representations abroad. At the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, the President of the Republic observed a minute of silence in memory of the chouhada, in the company of senior executives of the Presidency of the Republic. Likewise, the President of the Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, observed, at the headquarters of the Council, a minute of silence, in the presence of members of the Government and members and officials of the Council, on the sidelines of a plenary session of the Council, devoted to oral questions. The president of the National People’s Assembly (APN), Brahim Boughali also observed, in the company of deputies, executives and employees of the APN, a minute of silence in front of the institution’s headquarters.
On the sidelines of his working visit to the wilaya of Chlef, the Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, observed, at the CAPTEN industrial and commercial complex (Ténès,) a minute of silence in memory of the chouhada of the massacres of October 17, 1961, in the company of the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud and the Minister of Industry, Yahia Bachir.
For his part, Army General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense (MDN), Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), accompanied by MDN executives, observed, at the headquarters of the ANP General Staff, a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs victims of the brutal repression of peaceful demonstrations led by Algerians in France.
A minute of silence was also observed at the various Forces Commands and Military Regions. Ministries, institutions and state bodies also organized gatherings of contemplation on the occasion of National Emigration Day, during which a minute of silence was observed and the Fatiha recited in memory of the chouhada of the massacres of October 17, 1961.
