Liens historiques profonds – La Nouvelle République Algérie

Deep historical connections

The visit of the Vietnamese Prime Minister to Algeria is the first of its kind in ten years. Vietnamese observers recall that Vietnam and Algeria, although geographically distant, maintain deep historical ties, forged in particular during their struggle for national independence. They note that more than 60 years after the establishment of their diplomatic relations, the traditional friendship between the two countries has continued to be consolidated and developed in many areas.

Vietnamese sources note that political and diplomatic relations between the two countries are characterized by great trust, reinforced by regular exchanges of high-level delegations. The same sources point out that Algeria is today one of Vietnam’s important trade partners in Africa and in the field of investment, the oil cooperation project between large companies of the two countries constitutes a striking example. These sources also indicate that cooperation in defense and security matters is regularly maintained, exchanges in culture and sport are strengthened. They recall that in Algeria, several hundred Vietnamese martial arts clubs bring together tens of thousands of practitioners.

However, according to their estimation, despite still very vast potential for cooperation, exchanges, particularly in trade and investment, remain below capacity. However, several sectors present complementary opportunities, such as energy, oil and gas, agriculture, mining, food processing and manufacturing industries. On the Vietnamese side, we consider that the visit of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh should make it possible to take bilateral relations to a new stage, opening an era of deeper and more dynamic cooperation. As proof, the 13th session of the Algerian-Vietnamese Joint Commission brought together experts from the two countries, representing several ministerial sectors, notably the ministries of Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, Trade, Finance, Hydrocarbons and Mines, Energy and Renewable Energies, Environment and Quality of Life, Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Hydraulics, Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, and Housing, Urban Planning, City and Regional Planning. Also represented at this meeting were the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency, the Algerian Economic Renewal Council and the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
