The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa announced, Monday in Mascara, that the General Agricultural Census (RGA) operation has reached, at the national level, a progress rate of 68%, affirming that it is taking place in very good conditions. Hosting a press briefing on the sidelines of his inspection visit to the wilaya in the company of the Minister of Hydraulics, Taha Derbal, Mr. Cherfa stressed that the general agricultural census has reached, across the country, a progress rate of 68%, stressing that this operation is taking place in satisfactory conditions recording the support of farmers.
In this sense, the minister called on farmers and breeders in the country “to participate in this process related to statistics, in order to carry it out successfully, knowing that it will continue until July 17.” On the other hand, he announced the launch of the storage of 150,000 tons of potato harvest and 40,000 tons of onions at the national level, indicating that this operation is part of the national program of control system of agricultural products of large consumption “Syrpalac.”
He said that storing this quantity will ensure abundance on the market, especially in the months of September and October, as well as price stability for these two products.
Furthermore, Mr. Cherfa announced an increase to 10,000 hectares of the areas reserved for the cultivation of dried vegetables, in the wilaya of Mascara, for the next agricultural season 2024-2025, and this, within the framework of the national program for the development of strategic crops.
As part of the restructuring of agricultural farms for their reconversion into agricultural production units, the Minister reported the entry into service of 34 farms in different regions of the country, in partnership with private investors out of a total of 174 pilot farms identified by the Ministry at the national level, stating that his ministerial department is working to “strengthen the partnership with investors wishing to invest in the agricultural sector.” The inspection visit of the Ministers of Agriculture and Hydraulics in the wilaya of Mascara was marked by the inauguration of a farm for the production of laying hens in the commune of Bouhenni, as part of private investment. They also inspected a reservoir with a capacity of 15,000 m3 in the commune of Sig and inquired about the progress of the project to clean and desilt the Bouhanifia dam and the work to transfer water from the Fergoug dam to the commune of Fraguig.
In addition, they laid the foundation stone for the construction of a grain storage silo with a capacity of 1 million quintals in the provincial capital and visited the former pilot farm converted into a center specializing in the production of fruit trees in the commune of Maoussa.
It should be recalled that the National Chamber of Agriculture and the National Union of Algerian Peasants (UNPA) have perceived a positive reaction from farmers to the General Agricultural Census (RGA) operation running from May 19 to July 17, and professionals are optimistic about the positive impact of the expected results of this operation on the sector.
During a coordination meeting held in May in Algiers, and co-chaired by the President of the Chamber, Mohamed Yazid Hambli, and the Secretary General of the UNPA, Abdellatif Dilmi, the members of the Board of Directors of the Chamber stated that they had perceived “a good start to the census operation and a positive reaction from farmers.” They also noted that several farmers “approached the services responsible for the general census to obtain an appointment to record their data.”
Speaking on this occasion,
Mr. Dilmi highlighted the need to sensitize farmers on the importance of the census operation, in order to ensure coverage for all, and to provide data that meets the expectations of public authorities to develop future agricultural strategies.
He recalled that the census concerned farmers as well as operators, breeders and producers in order to know the potential and capacities of the sector, plan production programs and negotiate with the authorities in matters of marketing, storage, import and export.
