Under the direction of Italian conductor Damiano Giuranna, the World Youth Chamber Orchestra of Italy sublimated emblematic pieces of Algerian and Mediterranean music, while the Czech Boho Trio transported the spectators into a universe of melodies of yesteryear .
During the sixth evening of the 13th International Symphonic Music Festival held at the Algiers Boualem Bssaish Opera, the World Youth Chamber Orchestra presented a rich and varied program. The audience was amazed by the symphonic interpretation of Arabic and Amazigh pieces such as “Lamma Bada Yatathanna” in the Andalusian mouachah genre, “Doulab”, and “Eṭṭes, Eṭṭes” (Sleep) by Aït Menguellet.
The audience was left speechless while listening to these traditional compositions, magnified by the twelve musicians, whose standing playing added a dynamic visual dimension to their performance.
After an opening with the concerto for oboe and strings by Alessandro Marcello, the orchestra continued with suites for strings by Ottorino Respighi. The evening continued with operatic arias illustrating the tragedy of Ulysses’ death, interspersed with poetic recitations by soloist and actress Valeria Almerighi.
The evening took on a new dimension with the entry of the Trio Bohème on stage. Composed of pianist Jan Vojtek, violinist Matouš Pěruška, and cellist Kristina Vocetková, this Czech trio dazzled the audience with the trio in E minor, Op. 90 “Dumky” by Antonín Dvořák. Their interpretation, marked by exceptional intensity and sensitivity, was able to capture the melancholic soul and vibrant rhythms of this work.
The performance continued with “Dvořák in Cyprus” by Marios Christou, a contemporary piece inspired by Dvořák. The Trio Bohème rose to the challenge of this modern composition brilliantly, offering a fresh interpretation that won over the audience. The spectators applauded for a long time, honoring the virtuosity and complicity of the musicians.
On the sidelines of the concert, Antonia Grande, director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Algeria, told the press that the World Youth Chamber Orchestra will perform in Bejaia and at the Algerian National Mahieddine Bachtarzi Theater (TNA). “Our orchestra, made up of young students, will present to the Algerian and Bougeotte public, a theatrical and musical show, inspired by the Arabian Nights, in Italian and Arabic,” she said. And to add that “the choice of this orchestra to represent Italy at the Festival was based on the interest it has for world music and particularly for Algerian music”.
The same interlocutor recalled the “strong” and “friendly” relations between the two countries. “Relations between our two countries are excellent. Italy has been invited on numerous occasions to participate in several cultural events in Algeria,” she underlined.
For his part, Jan Vojtek, pianist of the Czech Bohème Trio, expressed his joy at representing his country at the Festival and his fascination for Algeria. “Our trio decided to present a part of Czech culture through our program. Symphonic music and popular music in Czechia are closely linked. It inspires composers of symphonic music,” he said. And to continue: “I hope that our participation will mark the beginning of a collaboration between Algerian and Czech musicians, because music is the language
