The Secretary General of the Workers’ Party (PT), Louisa Hanoune, a candidate for the next presidential election, announced this Saturday her withdrawal from the race for the highest office scheduled for September 7.

“I officially announce that the Workers’ Party will not participate in the electoral process related to the next presidential election. We are stopping the signature collection campaign. We will not participate in the electoral campaign or the voting process on September 7,” said PT Secretary General Louisa Hanoun in a video posted on the party’s official page.

In a statement published on the Workers’ Party Facebook page, following the work of the party’s Political Bureau, Louisa Hanoune nevertheless wished to thank the “local and national elected officials who are not PT activists and who agreed to sponsor my candidacy.”

The Trotskyist activist participated in the 2004 presidential election as the first Algerian woman candidate for the highest office. She obtained 1% of the vote. She then came second in the 2009 presidential election with 4.2% of the vote and then fourth in the 2014 presidential election with only 1.4% of valid votes.
