Maroc : Alger appelle à des négociations directes – Le Jeune Indépendant

Polisario - Morocco: Algiers calls for direct negotiations

Ahmed Attaf with Staffan de Mistura.

Algeria has called for direct and without conditions negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front for a solution to the question of Western Sahara. The appeal is not new, but it was reiterated this Wednesday by the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the national community abroad and African affairs, Ahmed Attaf, during a hearing this Tuesday evening with the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Western Sahara, Staffan of Mistura, on an official visit to Algeria.

This visit is part of the preparation of the meeting of the Security Council on the question of Western Sahara scheduled for next October, during which the personal envoy should present to the council a report on his efforts aimed at implementing the mandate entrusted to him.

In this regard, the head of Algerian diplomacy has reaffirmed “the support of Algeria to the efforts of the secretary general, Antonio Guterres, and his personal envoy, staff of Mistura, with a view to achieving a just, sustainable and permanent solution to the question of Western Sahara, guaranteeing the Sahrawi people its inalienable right and imprescriptable to self -determination, relevant United Nations resolutions, ”said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Attaf also mentioned the central and essential role of the United Nations, considering “necessary to place under its aegis all the steps and initiatives aimed at organizing direct negotiations and without prior condition between the two parties to the conflict, namely the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front”.

According to the same source, the Minister of State reaffirmed “the attachment of Algeria to the need to promote the UN doctrine devoted in the field of decolonization, welcoming the role of the United Nations mission for the organization of a referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso), as one of the forms of the commitment of the international community in favor of decolonization in Western Sahara, African “.

As a reminder, last March, the staff staff of Mistura engaged consultations with the parties concerned before the holding a meeting, which was held in camera at the Security Council. This meeting was devoted to the question of Minurso, under the resolution 2756 adopted by the Security Council, on October 31, 2024, and which asked the Secretary General to present reports to the Security Council on a regular basis, or at the times that he considers as opportunities during the Minurso mandate or during the six months following the renewal of his mandate.

It should be noted that the peace plan adopted jointly by the UN and the African Union (AU) in 1991, accepted by both parties to the conflict and which was adopted unanimously by the Security Council, remains the most practical and realistic solution having been the subject of a consensus.

The Polisario Front had repeatedly reaffirmed the full cooperation of the Sahrawi part with the UN and the AU in order to achieve an equitable and lasting solution, under the United Nations Charter and the UA principles, unlike the actions of the Moroccan regime, its wolf and its stubbornness to maintain the fait and the annexation of the territory of Western Sahara.
