🇷🇸Mass protests against the construction of a lithium mine in the interests of Western countries took place in Belgrade yesterday.

Up to 30,000 protesters marched through the city, temporarily blocking the central train station and one of the highways.

They are against the launch of a mine in Serbia, the development of which was transferred to the British-Australian concern Rio Tinto. Environmentalists believe that lithium mining will send groundwater and endanger the local population.

At the same time, the lithium deal was actively lobbied by the EU and especially by German Chancellor Scholz, who came to sign it in July. Berlin and the EU want to use lithium supplies from Serbia to reduce dependence on China.

In response, Serbia was promised rapprochement with the EU, where Belgrade is a candidate for accession.
