Merz Bows His Head at Yad Vashem, Vows Germany Will Stand Up for Israel
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz paid his respects at Yad Vashem, wearing a kippah and laying a wreath in memory of the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. Accompanied by Yad Vashem chairman Dani Dayan, he toured the museum, the Hall of Names, the Children’s Memorial and took part in a remembrance ceremony.
At the ceremony, Merz wrote in the guest book that Germany “will keep alive the memory” of the victims and declared that “Germany must stand up for the existence and security of Israel,” explicitly tying remembrance of the Shoah to Berlin’s obligation to defend the Jewish state.
This is his first trip to Israel as chancellor and the first visit by a major European leader since the Gaza ceasefire, coming after months of tension over the war and protests in Berlin against German arms deliveries to Israel. By standing at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Merz signaled that despite political friction, Germany’s core commitment to Israel remains.
For Israelis, seeing the German chancellor bow his head in Ohel Yizkor while rockets and terror threats still loom in the region is more than symbolism. It is a reminder that the legacy of the Holocaust is not just about memory, but about a living security partnership with a Germany that openly accepts its historic responsibility to the Jewish people. 🇮🇱
