Drinking water supply during the summer: Setting up a monitoring unit

Mitigating the impact of water stress.

Improving the drinking water supply is a priority for the authorities. A special program is drawn up on the instructions of the President of the Republic, particularly in forecasting high summer demand.

The point was made during a government meeting last Thursday, where the issue of drinking water was on the agenda. A monitoring and monitoring unit to improve the management of the supply of this vital liquid has been set up by the Ministry of Hydraulics.

Algeria is among the countries facing water stress due to lack of rainfall. A situation which has a direct impact on the availability of drinking water. To deal with this situation and guarantee a regular supply of drinking water by mitigating the impact of the shortage of this vital liquid, particularly during the summer, the authorities have placed this problem among the priorities.

Thus, the Prime Minister, Nadir Larbaoui, chaired, the day before yesterday, a government meeting devoted to examining the various measures taken for the execution of the instructions of the President of the Republic, relating to the improvement of supply in drinking water and the state of implementation of the special program he ordered to mitigate the impact of the shortage and develop water production capacities as part of an ambitious project aimed at responding in a manner sustainable to meet the needs of citizens and to cope with water stress due to drought and climate change. To do this, Algeria is using all the means at its disposal. In addition to the construction of several desalination stations in coastal cities, Algeria also relies on the exploitation of groundwater, drilling and others.

This is the case, for example, for the wilaya of Tiaret where a specific emergency program was put in place, on the instructions of the President of the Republic, to resolve the drinking water problem in this wilaya. This mainly concerns the realization of a groundwater transfer project from the region of Djermaya, in order to strengthen the supply of drinking water on the eastern side of the wilaya of Tiaret, in addition to the construction of 8,500 meters linear drilling, including equipment and electricity connection in the same wilaya, and the completion of 4,000 linear meters of deep exploration drilling in the regions of Rechaiga, Rahouia, Sidi Bakhti and Mecheraa Asfa, with a view to to strengthen the supply of drinking water in municipalities experiencing a supply deficit.

With the aim of improving water supply management, the Ministry of Hydraulics has just set up a monitoring and monitoring unit made up of central executives from the ministry and chaired by the secretary general of the Department of Water. ‘Hydraulic. This new structure’s mission is to guarantee the proper functioning of the public water service throughout the national territory.

This structure, which will work in close collaboration with the various local agencies and sector experts, is responsible for monitoring the hydraulic infrastructure in real time and reacting quickly to possible disruptions.

Furthermore, the government examined, during its meeting, a certain number of measures relating to the implementation of the national program for strengthening national cereal storage capacities, which constitute one of the major axes of national policy of food security decided by the President of the Republic, the issue being an absolute priority for food security.

The government also examined ways to promote the participation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the economic dynamics experienced by the country at the national and local level, through a regulatory framework compatible with the nature of their missions, allowing them to their members to manage their affairs efficiently and flexibly.

In addition, and as part of the simplification of procedures for examining and granting town planning acts, including building permits, and their delivery as quickly as possible, the government examined a draft executive decree setting the procedures for processing and issuing these documents, in particular the implementation of the digital platform for town planning acts as well as its generalization across the national territory.
