Anticipate the risk of flooding.
Faced with increasingly unpredictable climatic vagaries, the National Sanitation Office (ONA) started this week a national cleaning and cleaning campaign of sanitation networks, intended to anticipate the risk of flooding and protect the security of citizens. This was indicated by a press release from the office.
The ONA said that the campaign concerns 1,169 municipalities across national territory. He said, last Thursday, that the work mobilized 293 sanitation centers, responsible for monitoring and maintaining a network of pipes with a total length of 70,625 kilometers, thus covering the majority of urban and peri -urban areas.
This initiative intervenes in a context where intense rainy episodes are becoming more and more frequent, putting the infrastructure to the test and exposing certain regions to serious floods, especially during the period of the end of the summer when, in the past, dazzling thunderstorms have already caused many damage and bereaved many families.
The operations take place in the most sensitive districts, along the road axes and at the level of the points identified as the most exposed to the overflows, with the aim of preventing material damage and the health risks which can flow from heavy rains. The ONA teams work at a sustained pace, carrying out targeted interventions to ensure the fluidity of rainwater and reduce the risk of stagnation or flood.
The actions undertaken by the ONA cover several essential aspects. The teams carry out the cleaning and cleaning of sanitation networks in order to maintain operational pipes and avoid the accumulation of waste. They also disobey the avallitors and runoff canals, essential for rapid evacuation of rainwater. The cleaning of inspection chambers and the treatment of black dots, areas where obstructions are frequent, constitute another central aspect of operations, making it possible to significantly reduce the risk of flooding. Finally, the cleaning of wadis and retention basins, carried out in coordination with local authorities and environmental services, completes all the preventive interventions implemented by the Office to protect local residents and guarantee the right water flow.
All of these operations are planned in coordination with the municipalities, local authorities and rescue services, within the framework of an integrated approach to management of urban and hydraulic risks.
The ONA has also set up an emergency intervention system, activated from the first rains to guarantee a quick and effective response. The intervention teams remain on maximum alert, ready to intervene to unlock critical areas and protect the population. This proactive approach aims to limit material damage and disturbances in highly populated urban areas.
Beyond its technical interventions, the ONA insists on citizen responsibility. Residents are invited not to throw waste in pipes and sanitation networks, as these behaviors can cause obstructions, accentuate the risk of flooding and complicate the work of technical teams. Respect for these instructions, associated with cooperation with local authorities, contributes to environmental protection and health risk prevention.
It should be recalled that the country has regularly faced floods, especially during the fall and winter seasons, but also during the end of the summer when thunderstorms caused significant and mowed damage to many lives. These phenomena are often aggravated by anarchic urbanization, the failure of sanitation networks and the size of wadi beds by waste. According to official reports, around 689 risky sites have been identified across the country. The previous seasons have shown that effective prevention campaigns, associated with active citizen participation, can considerably reduce the impact of floods but above all save lives.
