The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Mr. Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, affirmed during a meeting with professionals in the cereal sector that efforts were underway to find solutions to all concerns as soon as possible.
According to a press release from the ministry, this national meeting dedicated to examining the prospects of the cereal sector, was held the day before yesterday Saturday at the headquarters of the ministry, with the participation of representatives of producers from different wilayas, the president of the National Chamber of Agriculture and the secretary general of the National Union of Algerian Peasants (UNPA).
During this meeting a “wider and frank” debate was opened on the reality of the cereal sector, listening to the concerns of producers as well as their proposals capable of giving new impetus to this strategic sector, “to which the State accords particular interest, given its close link with food security”, according to the same source.
Among the points discussed is the revision of the subsidy system for different production inputs, the creation of new insurance offers covering different risks faced by farmers, the use of new water resources in the wilayas affected by drought by strengthening the construction of dams, the collection of rainwater and the exploitation of wastewater.
The meeting also discussed ways to improve the technical process relating to the cultivation of cereals according to the specificities of each region and the requirements of producers, by involving technical institutes and strengthening their role in improving yield on the ground. There is also a question of financing where emphasis was placed on the need to find adequate solutions for farmers in debt due to drought, the revision of the conditions and procedures for obtaining seasonal credit ”R’fig”, and the creation of micro-credits intended for farmers.
The meeting also made it possible to discuss the question of the supply of advanced and specialized agricultural equipment to increase production and avoid crop losses at harvest, as well as the supply of spare parts, the simplification of administrative procedures for farmers and the availability of varieties of seeds adapted to the nature of each region.
