In a speech read on his behalf by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Mohamed Talhi, the minister highlighted the need to strengthen coordination and cooperation between different sectors as part of a global approach based on the “One Health” principle. Stressing, in passing, the importance of developing a national road map to promote the proper use of antimicrobials. “Antimicrobial resistance is now emerging as one of the major health threats of the century,” he said. continued, Recalling that the fight against antimicrobial resistance, integrated since 2019 into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), constitutes a major issue affecting health, food security and sustainable development.
For his part, the director of the National Agency for Health Security, Professor Kamal Sanhadji, reiterated the Agency’s commitment to supporting the efforts of the Ministry of Health and all stakeholders to, he indicated, ensure an effective fight against antimicrobial resistance.
The representative of the World Health Organization in Algeria, Fanuel Habimana, for his part, considered that the establishment by Algeria of a national antimicrobial resistance surveillance system constitutes a strong indicator which reflects, he said, these efforts in the face of this global challenge. Welcoming, in passing, the efforts made by Algeria in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, which demonstrate a clear commitment to the protection of public health and the strengthening of national health security.
For his part, the director of the University of Health Sciences and president of the Arab Association of Pulmonologists, Marzouk Garnaout, considered that the effective fight against antimicrobial resistance must be based on the rational use of antimicrobials and effective infection control. While promoting, he noted, health awareness to prevent this phenomenon.
