Planting of more than 1,390,000 trees!

Wide participation in the national campaign

The objectives set for the national tree planting campaign, which covered, the day before yesterday Saturday, the 58 wilayas, were exceeded, thanks to the large participation of citizens and Associations, said the Director General of Forests, Djamal Touahria. This involves the planting of more than 1,390,000 trees in different regions of the country, thanks to the strong popular mobilization aroused by the national campaign launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, in cooperation with the association ”Algérie Verte”.
Djamal Touahria underlined, in an interview with Channel I of the National Radio, that these encouraging results are the fruit of effective cooperation between the State and civil society and demonstrate Algeria’s gradual progress towards a sustainable environmental future based on reforestation, forest protection and the fight against desertification.
He added: “This unprecedented popular mobilization across the country reflects citizens’ growing awareness of the dangers of climate change, desertification and global warming.” Djamal Touahria explained that “this campaign coincided with National Tree Day, which marks the official launch of the reforestation campaign in Algeria, which runs until March 21, a date coinciding with World Tree Day.”
According to him, the operation aims to rehabilitate areas affected by the fires of recent years and to expand forest areas in the different provinces of the country. The Director General of Forests confirmed that the technical teams from the agricultural and forestry sectors provided species adapted to each region according to its climatic characteristics. These include olive, carob and pistachio trees, which are drought-resistant and economically advantageous.
He indicated that the planting operations were carried out according to precise technical standards, after pre-drilling in order to avoid random plantings. Trees from national nurseries affiliated with the Institute of Engineering and the Directorate General of Forestry were also used. In this context, Djamal Touahria confirmed the progress of the Green Dam revival project, implemented regularly since 2023 and extending until 2030.
This project aims to plant forest species resistant to global warming and the encroachment of forests, over an area estimated at 1,000 hectares. He revealed that more than 26,000 hectares have been planted to date, with a success rate above 98%, thanks to the supervision of specialized institutions and a specialized design office which monitors the progress of the project on the ground. Regarding forest fires, Mr. Touahria confirmed that the provisional results for the 2025 season were very positive, the affected areas having decreased to only around 4,090 hectares, compared to more than 40,000 hectares in previous years. He added: “The number of fires also declined to 880, a drop of 85 per cent from previous figures, thanks to the adoption of modern technologies such as firefighting aircraft, drones and early warning systems, as well as the combined efforts of various sectors across the country.” This tree planting campaign saw the participation of Sonatrach Group workers, across the different wilayas of the country, in the national campaign to plant a million shrubs, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said a press release from the public group. This participation followed the call launched by the public group to all of its workers, through its various subsidiaries, to contribute to this vast environmental initiative, specifies the Sonatrach press release, adding that this approach is part of the Group’s environmental and societal commitment, and its civic vision embodying the values of sustainability which underpin it. In Algiers, in the same context, the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, accompanied by the Minister, Wali of Algiers, Mohamed Abdenour Rabehi, supervised, at the Magtaâ Kheira forest, in the commune of Mahelma (administrative district of Sidi Abdellah), a planting operation of more than 12,000 trees.
