More than 200 international journalists have signed a petition addressed to the Israeli occupation authorities, demanding immediate access and without restriction from the Ghaza Strip, in order to freely cover the events related to the current war. In this declaration published on Monday, the signatories denounce the severe restrictions imposed by Israel since the start of its offensive on October 7, 2023, prohibiting the entry of the foreign press into the territory. They qualify this policy as “systematic media blackout”, undermining the very foundations of the freedom of the press in time of conflict. “This blackout is not only a humanitarian blockage, it is a blackout on truth and information. He weakens the law of the public, namely and mine the democratic function of the media, which consists in holding responsible power, ”says the petition. Journalists also pay tribute to Palestinian journalists in Gaza, welcoming their exceptional courage and professionalism in extreme conditions: under bombs, hunger, fatigue, family losses, and sometimes even injuries.
“They continue to document the facts in the field with rigor, despite permanent threats and almost nonexistent means,” said the signatories.
The petition warns against the pursuit of blackout, which represents a dangerous precedent, illustrating an authoritarian model of information control, aiming to silence independent voices and to break the essential link between facts and public understanding.
According to verified data, more than 230 Palestinian journalists have been killed since the start of the assault, some with their families. Dozens of press offices have been destroyed, while the Israeli authorities continue to prohibit access to foreign journalists.
The signatories conclude by affirming that defending press freedom in Gaza is to defend the right to truth all over the world, and that the silence of the international community in the face of this media seat is likely to encourage future violations of journalism on a global scale.
