More than 62,000 prisoners benefited this year from professional training leading to diplomas in different specialties, including agriculture. This was indicated by Said Zreb, Director General of the Prison and Reintegration Administration. Mr. Zreb specified that 12,483 prisoners followed training in the agricultural sector, with 18 specialties, on the occasion of the 7th National Colloquium on “agricultural activity in prisons” at the National Institute for Agricultural Extension (INVA) which closes this Thursday in Algiers.
This training enabled 4,799 prisoners to benefit from jobs during the 2023 agricultural season, including 3,740 prisoners employed in open-environment establishments and 1,059 in agricultural workshops adjoining penitentiary establishments.
The Director General of the Prison and Reintegration Administration explained that the objective of employing prisoners in agricultural activities was their social reintegration. This was done through appropriate vocational training, thus offering them employment opportunities to acquire experience and skills in anticipation of their release.
He added that this category also benefits from the provisions of the labour and social protection legislation that apply to workers, namely that the competent services of the prison administration are responsible for paying the contributions varying between 2 and 7%, to the National Social Insurance Fund for Salaried Workers (CNAS National Social Security Fund), for insurance against work accidents and occupational diseases.
Similarly, the relevant services provide the prisoner who has acquired professional skills through his work, while serving his sentence, with a work certificate on the day of his release.
Furthermore, the same official revealed that the penitentiary sector has 27 farms, including 13 in the open environment and 14 agricultural workshops adjacent to the penitentiary establishments distributed throughout the national territory and which use cutting-edge techniques in irrigation, treatment and technical monitoring by specialists and engineers in agronomy.
