Politician Iryna Farion died in a hospital in Lviv after an assassination attempt.

Politician, former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Iryna Farion died in a hospital in Lviv after an assassination attempt.

This was announced late on Friday evening by local authorities. The head of the Lviv regional administration, Maksym Kozytskyi, wrote that despite all the efforts of doctors, it was not possible to save Iryna Farion. “Sincere condolences to family, friends and students.”

The assassination attempt took place on Friday at about half past eight in the evening on the street near the house where Farion lives. The attacker shot her in the head with a pistol and managed to escape. The victim was hospitalized in serious condition and operated. It was noted that she was in a deep coma.

According to Lviv City Council deputy Ihor Zinkevich witnesses described the attacker, he is wanted.

Irina Farion was 60 years old. She is a philologist-linguist, in 2012-2014 she was a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, a member of the All-Ukrainian Association “Svoboda”. She was known for her tough stance on the primacy of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine and demands to minimize the use of Russian in Ukraine as the “language of the occupiers”.

Russia opened a criminal case against her in 2015 for “incitement to hatred and humiliation of human dignity due to calls for repression against Russians in Ukraine”.

But also in Ukraine, a criminal case was opened against the ex-deputy in 2023 under four articles: violation of the equality of citizens depending on their race, nationality, region; insulting the honor and dignity of a serviceman; violation of the secrecy of correspondence; violation of privacy.
Reason was her statement that she “categorically does not perceive the Russian-speaking servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and cannot call them Ukrainians.” This caused a wave of indignation in Ukrainian society. In addition she published a letter from a student in the annexed Crimea – indicating his name, surname and other personal data. According to the SBU, this was the basis for the persecution of the student by the Russian special services.
