Election of Algeria to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

The election, the day before yesterday, Friday, in New York, during the session of the United Nations General Assembly, with a very large majority of 185 votes out of the 190 countries having participated in the vote, as members of the Economic Council and Social Affairs of the United Nations (ECOSOC) for a mandate of 3 years, from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027, reflects the confidence that Algeria enjoys within the UN and marks proven recognition of its capacity to provide the expertise and commitment necessary to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, thus further consolidating its presence within the most influential bodies of the United Nations.
Through this election, Algerian diplomacy, and in application of the directives of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will aim to contribute, significantly, to the development of innovative political recommendations. Likely to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as the strengthening of development, which is the essential path to closing disparities within and between nations, in close collaboration with other parties stakeholders of this body composed of 54 members, 18 of whom are elected each year by the UN General Assembly for a three-year term.
Algeria sets itself objectives of the highest importance during its mandate on the Council, among
which, the strengthening of international solidarity, the contribution to social and economic development, facing the challenges linked to foreign occupation and the application of the principle of self-determination, contributions to international and regional funds dedicated to financing activities development or humanitarian aid, as well as encouraging foreign direct investment flows. And remains determined to commit to multilateral cooperation and global development, and to promote the fundamental values ​​at the heart of the United Nations mission of peace, development and human rights.
With this election, Algeria, which has already served for the periods 1964-1966, 1979-1981, 1983-1985, 1990-1992, 1998-2000, 2007-2009 and 2011-2013, becomes a member of this main body of the UN, for the eighth time in its history. Algeria also aims to strengthen development, which is the essential path to closing disparities within and between nations, in close collaboration with the other stakeholders of Ecosoc, one of the main organs of the Nations. united, and it is considered the main platform for discussing economic, social, cultural, health, human rights, women and youth issues. It is also responsible for coordinating the activities of relevant United Nations organs, agencies and programs.
