The State aims to make Algiers a modern, safe and attractive capital, with priority given to local management, the modernization of urban infrastructure, security, cleanliness and the development of transport, in particular with the extension of the metro and tramway.
This is what was highlighted this Saturday by the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, presiding, alongside the wali of Algiers, Mohamed Abdennour Rabhi, the installation of three new delegate walis, in this case Abdelfattah Ben Ghergoura at the head of the administrative district of Chéraga, Mahrez Maâmri at that of Dar El-Beïda and Zeidi Abdelmalek in the constituency of Sidi M’hamed.
Sayoud began his speech by affirming the desire of the public authorities to rehabilitate the symbolic sites of Algiers and restore its historical heritage, evoking a vast urban redevelopment project. He declared that this program aims “to highlight the architectural heritage while giving Algiers a modern appearance, through the renovation of infrastructure, the rehabilitation of old buildings, and the beautification of its main roads”. He maintained that the objective is to make the capital “a leading cultural and tourist destination” as well as a living symbol of Algerian history and renewal.
The minister also congratulated the teams from the wilaya of Algiers for the results obtained in the area of cleanliness and urban management. Thanks to several coordinated campaigns between municipal services, cleaning companies, environmental associations and civil society, the capital has regained its shine, particularly through the rehabilitation of gardens, public spaces and coastal sites.
Sayoud indicated that this approach is fully in line with the strategy of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aiming to anchor ecological and civic culture. He assured that “cleanliness should no longer be seen as a one-off task, but as a daily behavior reflecting the image of a civilized and modern capital”.
Metro and tram extension
In his speech, Mr. Sayoud spoke at length about structuring projects linked to transport, real levers for modernization and improvement in the quality of life of Algerians. He recalled that the capital is currently experiencing “a profound transformation” in this area, thanks to the extension of the Algiers metro, the modernization of the tram as well as the development of interconnected road and bus networks. The minister noted the importance of these investments, ensuring that “transport is the vital nerve of any metropolis. What we are achieving today in Algiers with the extension of the metro to peripheral municipalities and the improvement of road traffic reflects the desire of the President of the Republic to make urban mobility a fundamental right for all citizens,” he underlined.
He specified that the metro extension projects towards Bir Mourad Raïs, Baraki, and Douéra are progressing at a sustained pace, with the aim of opening up dense neighborhoods and reducing automobile congestion. At the same time, the modernization of bus transport, the creation of intermodal lines and the introduction of digital traffic management systems are part of a global vision of sustainable and intelligent mobility. Mr. Sayoud explained that “these infrastructures reflect a modern conception of the city, where public transport becomes not only a service but a vector of social cohesion and economic development”.
The minister did not fail to emphasize that “security remains the cornerstone of any development policy”. He praised the decisive role of the forces of the People’s National Army (ANP) and the security services in protecting citizens, infrastructure and public property. He assured that “thanks to their commitment and the vigilance of the inhabitants, Algiers is today a stable, serene and forward-looking capital.”
Furthermore, he noted that “Algiers presents itself today as an open-air construction site”, listing the major projects in progress such as structuring road networks, new schools, hospitals, sports and cultural infrastructures, administrative centers and integrated economic zones. He thus maintained that the new town of Sidi Abdellah is establishing itself as a national and regional model, with its modern infrastructure, its housing, its university establishments and its innovative scientific center. He stressed that “this city embodies President Tebboune’s vision of an Algeria focused on knowledge, sustainability and innovation. “.
In addition, the minister welcomed the rehabilitation of historic districts and old buildings, the revitalization of the waterfront, and the creation of new leisure and commercial spaces. These transformations, he noted, have given the capital “a dynamic and secure nightlife, symbol of a modern and attractive city”. Calling for synergy between institutions, elected officials and civil society, Mr. Sayoud recalled that the success of projects depends above all on consultation and collective work. “Authentic development can only be achieved in a spirit of shared responsibility and continuous coordination between the different local actors,” he concluded.
