rejects Elon Musk’s Starlink premise and plans to
implement InternetBras in Brazil, a
satellite internet access system
⁉️ The responsibility for managing this project will lie with Telebras, a state-owned company that remains under federal control despite the privatization of telecommunications in Brazil in 1998. The challenge lies in operationalizing the project.
⚠️ Currently, there is only one constellation of 5,400 satellites suitable for providing this internet connection—all owned by Elon Musk. Brazil would need to lease satellites, but the only ones available for such a function are Starlink’s.
💸 The decision, made on May 17 by Gape, the group responsible for school connectivity, involves funds directed by telecommunications operators for this purpose. Gape comprises eight members: four from operators, two from Anatel, one from the Ministry of Communications, and one from the Ministry of Education (MEC).
💰 Gape accepted the Ministry of Communications’ proposal to connect schools through a program operated by Telebras. One of the New PAC’s goals is to provide internet to 138,000 public schools.
📚 The MEC issued a regulation in August 2023, establishing rules for internet in remote schools. However, it was assessed that only Starlink could meet the required minimum speed.
⭐ In October 2023, Minister Camilo Santana (Education) revoked the regulation due to the current government’s ideological conflicts with Starlink.
